Switzerland, here I come!

Posted by on 16 May 2004

It’s official, I’m off to Switzerland in 5 weeks time for a summer placement – woohoo! Finally received the acceptance papers.

For the past year I’ve been planning on working abroad for this summer. Why? Because I got so bored during last summer I vowed to do something different and new this year. So after a bit of research I came across IAESTE in which they specialise in finding work placements in a foreign country for students in scientific and engineering subjects.

So after a lot of paperwork, I have now been accepted by my employer, EMPA Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research (what a mouthful!). My task doesn’t exactly sound easy however: “Create Matlab/Simulink tool for muffler design and their acoustical response.” I’m really looking forward to it though, and I’ve been trying to squeeze in extra reading on this topic in between revision and other stuff. But it does sound like something fun and I something that I am genuinely interested in.

Being the type that doesn’t travel anywhere, I am a little scared of what Switzerland has to offer me. I’ll be in the Zurich region, so I’m supposed to speak Swiss-German to the locals. However, the two years I had of learning german from secondary school which was about 8 years ago, I have practically forgotten, so I’m trying to learn german too.

So tomorrow (Monday) I will book my tickets, sort out travel and health insurance and send off more paperwork.

Right now, it’s back to revision. ARGH!! So much to do. Exam stress! Can’t wait till they’re all over…
